Physical Therapist Assistant

PTA is currently accepting applications for 2013-2014.

Application deadline is April 1.

The Profession

The PTA works under the supervision of a Physical Therapist. The duties include assisting the Physical Therapist in implementing treatment programs according to plan of care. The PTA trains patients in exercises and activities of daily living, conducts treatments using special equipment, administers modalities and other treatment procedures and reports to the Physical Therapist on the patient's response.

 

Admission Requirements

Students Seeking admission to the PTA program must first meet Southwestern Oklahoma State University Sayre Campus admission standards. They may make application to attend SWOSU either at the Sayre or Weatherford campuses. The General Education and Technical Occupational Support courses may be taken at SWOSU Sayre or Weatherford. Prerequisite courses from other accredited institutions may be transferred for acceptance into the program.

A separate application is required for admission to the PTA - Technical Occupational Specialty program at the CKTC campus in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. Applications for this program are available from CKTC by mail for a fee of $5, or can be downloaded for free.

Admission to this portion of the program will be very competitive and will be based on grade point averages, interviews, references, experience and other evidence of potential success in the program.

Admission to SWOSU does not guarantee admission to this portion of the PTA prgram, although applicants are awarded 1 point per technical support course prerequisite taken at SWOSU for up to 5 points. All technical support courses must have been taken within the past 7 years for the date of application. Admissions are limited to the top 14 students.

Accreditation

The SWOSU/CKTC PTA program is currently fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association. The next scheduled accreditation is scheduled for the fall of 2019.

Employment

PTAs are employed in all types of health care facilities and clinics, as well as home health, public schools and educational organizations. They may also have their own individual practice. Starting salaries vary considerable depending on type of facility.

Enrollment is limited to 14 students.

All students accepted into the program will be required to pass a drug screen and criminal background check before participation in Clinical Practicum I. These will be conducted during the first week of class at CKTC.

By Oklahoma State Law, no persons with a felony record will be allowed to acquire/possess a PT or PTA license.
