NASA Visit

Educators from Caddo Kiowa Tech Center and Riverside visit NASA

Fort Cobb, OK – September 5, 2006 – Local educators from Caddo Kiowa Tech Center and Riverside recently visited NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Funds for the trip were provided by a NASA grant "Reach For The Stars" Educational Program For Native American Students that the Busey Group wrote for Riverside Indian School and Caddo Kiowa Technology Center.

Tom Weichel, Larry Willis, Jack Bointy, Cheryl Redelk and Theodore Sheridan toured NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) on Monday August 7, 2006. The group’s tour guide was Donna Kitchens and Host was Susan Anderson (Astronaut Clayton Anderson's wife).

The tour began at the Scotty Carter Buoyancy Lab and the team observed astronauts training. The lab is a huge pool of water that is 150 feet across, nearly 300 feet long and 40 feet deep that contains the Shuttle and the International Space Station mock up for training.

Next was the Mission Operation Control Center (MOCR), which was used for the Apollo Program, the moon landing missions, and the Control Center for the Shuttle Mission. They also observed some simulation for the upcoming mission.

It was then on to the International Space Station Control Center where the educators observed ongoing operations. They also toured the training facility that contained the Shuttle and the International Space Station.

The group concluded the tour at the JSC Educators Resource Center and picked up information and posters.

The NASA grant supports the Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) cluster. This grant is a resource for the new CKTC Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Pre-Engineering program and the Riverside Indian School PLTW Gateway To Technology program.

The team will be providing leadership to Riverside and Caddo Kiowa Tech Center School's pre-engineering program.

Caddo Kiowa Technology Center's campus is located in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. Additional information about programs and services at CKTC is available at www.caddokiowa.com, and statewide information is available at www.okcareertech.org.
