CKTC Pre-Engineering students head to college

Fort Cobb, OK – April 7, 2014 – The Pre-Engineering Program at Caddo Kiowa Technology Center serves students who have an interest in the engineering industry and are focused on preparing for the rigorous academic demands of a college engineering degree program.

Nathan Rutherford, a Hydro-Eakly senior and Madi Mayer, a Cyril senior, are doing exactly what the Pre-Engineering program at CKTC was designed to do: Encourage high school students to pursue a career in engineering and set them up for success in a degree program at college. Both seniors will start college this fall at Oklahoma State University’s Engineering School.

“I was able to take Physics and Calculus [at CKTC],” said Rutherford; Mayer concurred. Neither of the advanced courses were offered at their home school; but, according to research by the National Alliance for Pre-Engineering Programs, the dropout rate in colleges of engineering and engineering technology programs exceeds 50 percent in the first two years.

Two contributing factors for this high number are that students don’t have an understanding of what engineers do and they didn't take the right combination of high school courses to prepare them to succeed in this rigorous course of study, according to Robin Schott, Senior Director of Engagement - West Central Region at Project Lead the Way.

To help students who are interested in an engineering career be successful, Oklahoma's CareerTech system partnered with the National Alliance for Pre-Engineering Programs/Project Lead the Way. This initiative offers a sequence of pre-engineering courses: principles of engineering, introduction to engineering design, digital electronics, computer integrated manufacturing, and engineering design and development.

“The goal is to help students be successful in obtaining an engineering degree at the university level.” said instructor Marcia Harmon.
